Betsy DeVos is a philanthropist and education activist who hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since the 1980’s, Betsy has been married to her husband, Dick Devos, who is a businessman but got involved in the political world as well. Mr. and Mrs. DeVos are longtime activists and donors of the Michigan Republican Party. Betsy and Dick have been married for more than 30 years and were blessed with four children, two sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren.
About Betsy Devos
In 1979, Betsy obtained a bachelor’s degree in business economics from Calvin College. During her time at Calvin College, she was heavily involved in campus politics, and since then she has remained politically active. For the past thirty years, Mrs. DeVos has led several campaigns, political action committees, and party organizations. Betsy also serves as the chairperson of a privately held company in Michigan that she founded with her husband in 1989 known as the Windquest Group. The firm invests in manufacturing, clean energy, nonprofit solutions, hospitality, and technology.
Mrs. DeVos pursues reforms through various nonprofit roles. For example, she is the chairperson of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, and a member of Kids Hope USA, DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center, the Foundation for Excellence in Education, and Mars Hill Bible Church. Mrs. DeVos is well known in the education circles for offering families private-school vouchers. According to her interview with the Philanthropy Roundtable in 2013, she mostly focuses on educational choices and champions top-notch education for all students, regardless of their status or location.
About Dick Devos
DeVos is a helicopter pilot, highly qualified jet aircraft and two time National Champion sailor. Dick is a graduate of Northwood University and a former member of the Michigan State Board of Education. Dick DeVos’s business career has involved executive positions at the NBA’s Orlando Magic, Amway, and The Windquest Group. Apart from his business role, Dick is also an active member of the community. He serves as a board member of the West Michigan Aviation Academy, Spectrum Health, Project Clarity, the Grand Rapids Economic Club, and Willow Creek Association. Dick founded the Education Freedom Fund, which has awarded over 4,000 scholarships to underprivileged children in the Michigan area.
In 1997, his book, Rediscovering American Values, was published in seven languages as New York Times best-selling book. In 2006, Dick DeVos was the Republican nominee for Governor of Michigan governor. In 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao appointed DeVos to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Management Advisory Council.
